Path to Pediatric Ophthalmology
Soni originally intended to become a pediatrician, but during medical school he discovered that ophthalmology allowed him to combine medicine and surgery. He was drawn to pediatric ophthalmology because it provided the opportunity to make a difference early in a child’s life.
He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and then pursued a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Center.
“You have an opportunity to really impact a child’s life trajectory by improving their vision.”
Practicing Pediatric Ophthalmology
Dr. Soni practices at PennState Health, where he focuses on pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus. He enjoys working in an academic environment because of the opportunity to teach residents and medical students while also providing specialized care to children.
He values the balance between clinical practice, education, and research, and believes pediatric ophthalmology offers a uniquely fulfilling career that combines technical skill, compassion, and long-term patient relationships.
“Wherever you go, you will feel valued, you will feel needed.”
