Joseph H. Calhoun, MD (1936–2008)
Dr. Calhoun graduated from the University of West Virginia (BA) and the University of Pennsylvania (MD). After 2 years in the US Air Force, he returned to Wills Eye Hospital for residency in Ophthalmology and thereafter to be Robison Harley’s first Pediatric Ophthalmology fellow. He became Director of the Pediatric and Motility Service at Wills Eye and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University, trained countless fellows and served as AAPOS President. Dr. Calhoun authored numerous original scientific papers and book chapters, and received countless honor awards for his academic and professional achievements. He was ‘‘a great teacher by both instruction and example, and above all, a modest and caring person’’. In the mid-80’s, he started an annual one day pediatric ophthalmology forum that became an example of how free discussion leads to effective and enduring CME. ‘‘Joe’s meeting’’ will continue as a memorial to this legendary educator.
